01 Initial consultation

We start by looking properly at your teeth, your bite and your gums, and by understanding your concerns and goals. Some people come in wanting one specific tooth corrected. Others want a full realignment. Both are valid starting points.

This is also the appointment to ask the practical questions: how long, how much, how visible, and what happens if you lose an aligner. Nothing is committed to on the day.

02 Digital scans and treatment planning

If Invisalign looks appropriate, we take a digital scan of your teeth using an intraoral scanner, which replaces the older putty impressions. Those scans feed into ClinCheck®, the planning software we use to map each stage of tooth movement.

You will see a 3D simulation of the projected result before any aligners are manufactured. It is a projection based on the treatment plan rather than a promise, but it gives you a realistic sense of what treatment is aiming for and lets you raise anything you would like adjusted before the plan is finalised.

03 Wearing your aligners

Your custom aligners arrive and we fit the first set, along with any attachments (small tooth-coloured shapes bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners grip and guide movement).

Each set is typically worn for one to two weeks. Aligners come out for eating, for drinking anything other than water, and for brushing and flossing. Otherwise they stay in. Most treatment plans call for 20 to 22 hours of wear per day, and how closely you stick to that has a direct effect on how well and how quickly treatment tracks.

We schedule review appointments to check progress. These visits are usually shorter and less frequent than the adjustment appointments associated with fixed braces.

04 Retention

Once the final aligners have done their work, we discuss retention. Teeth have a tendency to drift back toward their original positions, so a retainer, either bonded behind the teeth or removable, is almost always recommended. Retention is not an optional extra at the end. It is the part that protects everything the treatment achieved.

Am I too old for Invisalign?

There is no upper age limit. A good proportion of the adults who start Invisalign with us are in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

For some, straightening their teeth was always on the list and life kept getting in the way. For others, teeth have drifted gradually over the years, often after braces in their teens, and they want to address it before it progresses further.

Age itself is not the deciding factor. What matters is the health of your gums and the bone supporting your teeth, because orthodontic movement relies on that foundation being sound. That is one of the things we assess at your first appointment.

Could Invisalign work for your teeth?

Invisalign handles a wider range of cases than many people assume, and the system has changed considerably over the past decade. That said, it is not the right answer for everything, and suitability depends on your individual bite, the health of your gums and supporting bone, and how much movement is needed.

For mild to moderate alignment concerns, clear aligners with an experienced provider can produce excellent results without a specialist referral. For more complex skeletal or bite problems, fixed braces or an orthodontic referral may be the better path.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Most people describe pressure or tenderness for a day or two after changing to a new aligner, easing as the teeth respond. That sensation is a normal part of how the treatment works. Individual experience varies, and some people notice it more than others. Most find it more manageable than the days following a traditional brace adjustment.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

It depends on how far your teeth need to move. Minor corrections may take around six months. More comprehensive treatment commonly runs somewhere between 12 and 18 months, and complex cases can take longer.

Wear time is the other variable, and it is the one you control. Aligners only move teeth while they are in your mouth, so consistent wear is what keeps treatment on schedule. You will receive an estimated timeline as part of your treatment plan, and we will review progress at each check-in.
